My dear Sphena,

In your recent letter, you have informed me that you have been declared successful in the I.A.S. Competitive Examination and that you will shortly go to Mussoorie to get training at Shri Lal Bahadur Institute of I.A.S. training. I was very glad to learn all about this. A man of your caliber and qualifications was expected to come out successful with flying colors in the I.A.S. competitive examination.

But I often think it would be much better if you join the educational service and become a lecturer in some college or university. I agree with you that an I.A.S. job is a coveted one and it offers a very bright job to an ambitious young man. But an executive job has its own worries, toils, and troubles, and a peace-loving and an easy going man like you may not like it in the end. Therefore I am of the view that the job of a lecturer will be most suitable for you. In fact, men of your moral and intellectual attainments are Urgently needed in our educational institutions.

As is known to everybody, the teaching profession does not attract talented persons. Only those who cannot find a better job enter this profession in large numbers. Educational standards are very low in India. Teachers and lecturers are not also much interested in their work as they are supposed to be. Your sacrificing a brilliant career in I.A.S. for the sake of teaching profession will have a healthy effect on others.

In addition to the above, the work of a college or university lecturer is very interesting. Every day you have to enjoy the company of the younger people and you yourself feel young. Moreover, a lecturer lives in an intellectual atmosphere, reading books, taking part in seminars and conferences and coming into contact with great minds. As you have studious habits, you could easily write a thesis for the Ph.D. degree and be eligible for the post of a Professor and the Head Of your department. Then you will draw a handsome salary. You could even go abroad and spend a year or so in a foreign university. This will surely widen your knowledge, sharpen your intellect, enlarge your outlook and broaden the sphere of your sympathies. On your return, you could encourage and inspire your students to do research work under your guidance.

Lastly, you could build the character of your young persons. Today India suffers from a crisis of character. Most of the statesmen, politicians, administrators, and scholars have lost their character. They are depraved and demoralized. We really need men of character in our educational institutions to build up the character of the young.

Although it is too late to guide you yet I hope you would pay heed to my suggestion and accept the job of a university lecturer and contribute your mite to the cause of higher education in the country.

Pay my respects to the elders and love to the young over.

Yours sincerely,

Ali Akbar.
