My dear Shankar,

I got a letter from mother. I felt pained to know that you are spending most of your time after school watching television. She says that you have become a TV addict and you are not at all bothered about your studies. This has shocked me.

You must know that by becoming a television addict, you will be losing on all sides. In fact, you will not be able to maintain your position in the class. You have been standing first in the class. Spending more time on television will make less time available for your studies. Most television programs are shown late at night. You will have to keep awake. This will have a bad effect on your health. Addiction to television will make you a couch potato. It will increase passivity in you and hinder free thinking.

It is not that I am preaching to you. I want you to realize that most television programs are useless. It does not mean that I want to put a ban on your watching of television. You may spend an hour or so for entertainment and information. But you should not become an addict. Pay my respects to dear mother.

Yours affectionately,

Anil
