Letter to a friend for acquainting him with prominent social reforms In India
15th June, 201…
My dear Smith,
You have rightly appreciated the economic and political changes that have taken place in our country. None can deny that democracy has taken firm roots in India in spite of the fact that she is surrounded by terrible dictators and in the field of science, technology and industry India has registered marked progress and has quite a favorable balance of trade and plenty of food-stuff.
But perhaps the greatest leap that India has taken has been in the social field. The caste-ridden Indian society has realized at last the uselessness of the caste system in the context of modern conditions. Untouchability has been abolished under the law and Even the orthodox Brahmans have thrown open their temples to the Harijans. Now their lot is much better.
But probably the biggest social change has been in the position and status of women because the women of India are no longer weak, passive and backward. They are playing their effective role in all walks of life and competing with men in all the spheres of life because of all this, Most of their social-economic disabilities have been removed.
The Widow Re-marriage Act, Share in their father’s property Inheritance Act, Muslim Women Divorce Act, Employment opportunities, etc. have made them independent. As a result of the recently gained freedom, they have distinguished themselves in various spheres of life as teachers, doctors, scholars, poets, diplomats, ministers, ambassadors, administrators and what not.
Today the Indian women have been liberated like their sisters in the west. Dowry system has been abolished in various states. The signs of inferiority have been removed from their names.
With best regards,
